The
units
and
specific
content
for

1. Introducing Media Studies
The units are: Introduction, Media Concepts, The Media and Media Issues.
These
units
cover
types
of media, the key concepts of language, representation, institutions and
audience, media history, the issues of whether the media is good or bad,
media culture in the UK and changing technology.
2. Media Institutions
The units are: Institutions, Media in Society, Development and The BBC.
These units include the multinationals, starting up a media institution,
niche markets, TV institutions, media freedom in a democracy, media
controls, stages in developing a media company, promoting image and
identity with The BBC as an example.
3. The Media Language
The units are: The Message, The Language and Delivery. These units
include ways to communicate, messages- written , verbal and using
images, media terms and products, codes and conventions in using
language, four examples of visual language are used for students to
apply their own message and then these are related to denotation,
connotation, narrative and for an image analysis.
4. The Audience
The units are: Relationship, Research, When and Where (Context) and
Protection. These units include media relationship with the audience
e.g. as consumers and the question of who controls whom and how much the
media is part of our lives types of audience and the use of research to
create audience segmented products including sampling and socio economic
groups to plan programmes and schedules, adapting to changing audience
habits and controls.
5. Representing Your Message
The units are: Versions of Reality, Representations, and Content
Analysis. These units include factors that influence the media, choosing
a version of reality, bias, propaganda and spin, selling ideology,
stereotypes and archetypes, icons and soaps.
6. Bringing The News
The units are: Overview, Finding the News, and News Team. The units
include TV News a s an anchor point, breaking news, how the news is
brought to the news room, resources used, different styles of conveying
news, presentation skills, deciding what is newsworthy, and the
production.
7. Advertising
The units are: An Overview, Forms, Power and The Industry. The units
include the purpose of advertising, who advertises, product placement,
types of advertising- TV, radio, press, the target audience, costs,
audience segmentation, using appropriate text, sponsorship, the power of
advertising as part of mass culture, ASA controls and the role of
advertising.
8. Radio
The units are: Introduction, Why Radio? Radio Stations and Changes. The
units include radio history, radio waves their uses and how radio works,
radio frequencies, styles of presenting, ownership, audience profiles,
music radio, presenting a radio programme, the licence system,
controlling output, pirate radio, BBC radio, new technology and radio
news.
9. The Moving Image
The units are: Background, The industry and Creating a Film. The units
include making a film, the history of the industry, Hollywood, cinema
today, the film idea, finance, stars, releasing a film, ways of
promotion, independent film companies, techniques to help the audience
understand the film e.g. time, mood, motion, tension and emotion.
10. The Music Industry
The units are: History, The Industry and The Artists. These units
include recording history, the industry in Britain, major recording
companies, independent labels, finance, steps in the development of a
recording artist, including promotion image and marketing and
merchandising.
11. The Written Word
The units are: Background, Style, Publication and Changing Issues. These
units include newspaper history, broadsheets and tabloids, techniques
used, structuring a front page, newspaper styles e.g. The Sun, Daily
Mail etc in reporting the news and using headlines, the process of
publishing a story, designing, layout and printing and the changing
nature of our newspapers.
