Box Presentations.
Citizenship
1. Being a Citizen
The units are: Citizens Rights, Responsibilities, Law &
Order and Community. These
units
introduce
our rights and how they are protected in law, the human rights act, the
history of human rights, our responsibilities as citizens, law & order,
punishment, the community and volunteering.
2. One Nation
The units are: British ness, Multiracial Britain, A Changing World and
Racism. These units include an introduction to what is it to be British,
the debate about a multiracial multicultural and or an integrated
Britain, our changing population, a better life, new immigrants, ethnic
origins, combating racism, the importance of religion and culture.
3. Our Community
The units are: The Council, Your Environment, and Participation. These
units include who runs your community and the role of your elected
council, community services, your local landscape how it is changing and
what can be done to improve it, employment in your local area, the
importance of open space, vandalism, getting involved and an evaluation
of your local community.
4. Our Country
The units are: Where are we? The Landscape, The People and Our Problems.
These units include what are the British Isles and The UK, where we are
and our relationship to other countries the EU and the Commonwealth, an
appreciation of the variety and beauty of our landscapes, the
differences between parts of the country and why some are more crowded
than others, the structure of our population, the census and facts about
our changing society and a consideration of some of the problems that we
face.
5. Rich and Poor
The units are: A Divided World, Poverty and Unfair Shares. These units
include the divisions of the world into rich and poor
countries, the north south divide, human development index, what do we
mean by poverty, measuring poverty, GNP, how we use energy, unfair
shares of resources, infant mortality differences, differences in our
cities and our homes, why are LEDC's poor, and action against poverty.
6. The Environment
The units are: People Problems, Habitats, The Atmosphere, and Our
Footprint. These units include Too many people, population growth and
its problems, the use of resources, pollution, habitat destruction and
protection, the oceans and seas, extinctions, air pollution, the
greenhouse effect, global warming, carbon footprint, your carbon
footprint, offsetting, and the ozone layer is this a success story?
7. Global Community
The units are: Divisions of the World, The EU and One World. These units
include how the world is divided physically and politically, the EU its
history and institutions, The Council of Ministers, The European
Commission, The European Parliament, The European Court of Justice,
being an EU citizen how important and relevant is this to us? the role
of The Commonwealth related to the EU, the UN, The Security Council, The
UN General Assembly, the work of the UN and the work of environmental
groups.
8. The UK Government
The units are: Elected, The Monarchy, Our Government and Democracy.
These units include how the UK is governed, the Parts of the UK,
parliamentary democracy, becoming an MP, being elected with the example
of a young MP, what is a monarchy, the role of the Queen, Westminster,
The House of Lords and House of Commons, the current political make up
of the commons, political reform ideas, devolution in relation to
Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland consideration of Ireland and its
history, the layers of government, the civil and local service, voting
and the ideals of democracy.
9. The Media in Society
The units are: What is the Media? Influence of the Media, Organization
and The Media & You. These units include an introduction to the media,
its history and role in a democracy, freedom of the press, a
consideration of the good and bad points about the media, how the media
fits into society and our UK culture, the growing importance of the
media with technological change, the structure of the media including
the big media institutions, how the media influences you including
advertising, the media and how it treats you, distortion of the truth,
stereotyping, the influence of soaps, the use of the media for
propaganda and young people in the media.
PSHE
1. Self Image
The units are: Feeling Good, Relationships and Issues. These units
include finding out how you feel about yourself, personal qualities,
confidence, attractiveness, taking care of personal appearance,
friendships, self image, sexuality, special relationships, family life,
avoiding conflict, bullying, depression, mental illness and getting
help.
2. Sex and You
The units are: Adolescence, Relationships, and Conception. These units
include being attracted to someone, body changes at puberty,
reproductive organs, issues regarding sex, saying no, the law, emotions
involved and the importance of meaningful relationships, sperm, STD's
deciding on having children and contraception.
3. Smoking
The units are: History, Breathing in and The Costs. These units cover
the history of tobacco use, chemicals in cigarettes, effects on the
lungs, why is it harmful, declining lung function, death and smoking,
aging effects, is it attractive? why smoke? and giving up.
4. The Drugs Issue
The units are Drugs Background, About Drugs, The Effects. These units
include the history of drug use, why people take drugs, types of drugs,
harm to the body and mental health, unknown ingredients, peer pressure,
the law, cannabis, drugs in sport, the effects of drug misuse.
5. Alcohol
The
units
are:
History,
Facts, Society and Problems.
These units cover
the history and use of alcohol, the physical
effects, hangover, the law, drink culture, unit limits, alco-pops, long
term health problems, misuse and violence, binge drinking, alcoholism,
drink driving and sensible drinking.
6. Exercise
The units are: Your Shape, The Benefits, The Costs, and Taking Part.
These units include exercise for different people and different body
shapes, mental health and physical health benefits, health problems from
being unfit, fat and diets, types of fitness e.g. muscular endurance,
flexibility and coordination, affects on heart and lungs, problems with
heart disease and high blood pressure, different types of exercise and
participation.
7. Health Issues
The units are: Safety, Eating, Health Risks, Mental Health. These units
include safety issues for young people, including road accidents and
their causes, being street wise, abuse, the issues of obesity, eating
disorders, the need to exercise, drug abuse, meningitis, HIV AIDS and
protection, the important issues of mental health and mental illness.
8. You are what you eat
The units are: Food basics, Food & Health, Food Hygiene and Eating
Issues. These units include meal times at home, a balanced diet, organic
and GM foods, food for health, food and exercise, avoiding sugars,
nutrients, energy needs, illness caused by poor diet, enjoying a variety
of foods, safety in preparation and storage, how much should you eat?
obesity, school meals, BMI and anorexia.
9. Relationships and Parenting
The units are: Becoming a Parent, A Child's Needs, The Family and Social
Development. These units include the responsibility of being a parent,
unplanned pregnancy issues, reasons for having children, providing for
children e.g. a safe and secure home, stable relationships, basic needs
working parents, spending time with the child, safety, support of an
extended family, one parent families, divorce, the importance of the
father, discipline, building self esteem and confidence and learning
social skills.
10. Pregnancy and Birth
The units are: Pregnant, Pregnancy Health, Growing Baby, and Labour.
These units include teenage pregnancy, signs of pregnancy, the menstrual
cycle and fertility, health in pregnancy including eating safe food,
smoking, alcohol and drugs, tests for abnormality, the stages of labour
and birth.,
